Letter from someone in Daily Mirror
    Feb 8 1926

    My Dear Boy,

Gerrard asked me to get you this photograph as I am on the staff of the Daily Mirror.
Your father is on the bridge and it forms a fine pictorial record of a very brave man.
While the picture must be painful to you, I am sure that all your life you will find consolation in the brave discharge of duty that is here portrayed. May we all do our duty as fearlessly.

    With deepest sympathy

    From Gerrard's father

Life at sea was hard and required the highest standards of training to instill qualities of leadership necessary for cadets to become officers in the British Merchant Navy. The training ship HMS Conway was specially founded for this purpose, and during its 115 year existence it trained over 11, 000 young boys for life in the Merchant Navy, Royal Navy and other armed services, not only in Britain but in navies worldwide.
